What outdoor landscape lighting includes
Path and step lights.
Low, ground-level fixtures that mark the edge of a walkway or highlight the rise of each step. These matter as much for safety as looks, especially on interlocking steps where a shadow can hide a change in height.
Uplighting.
Fixtures placed at the base of a tree, wall, or column that throw light upward. This is what gives a mature tree or a stone retaining wall a dramatic look at night instead of just disappearing into the dark.
Accent and patio lighting.
Softer, ambient light around seating areas, pergolas, or outdoor kitchens, meant for evenings spent outside rather than for navigation.
Why lighting should be planned before construction, not after
This is where a lot of lighting installs go wrong. If you wait until your patio or driveway is finished to add lighting, your installer is stuck running wire on the surface, cutting into finished stone, or relying on solar stakes that never quite light the space the way you pictured.
When lighting is planned during the interlocking phase, the wiring runs underneath the base before the stone goes down. Fixture locations get chosen to match the actual layout of your steps, beds, and features, not squeezed in around them. It also means your transformer and conduit runs are hidden from day one, so the finished look is clean.
If you already have a patio or driveway installed, retrofitting is still possible. It just means your installer needs to plan cable runs through garden beds or soil rather than under the stone itself, which can limit fixture placement in some spots.
Lighting types we install
Low voltage LED systems.
The standard choice for most residential projects. LED bulbs run for tens of thousands of hours before needing replacement, use a fraction of the power of older halogen fixtures, and produce very little heat.
Solar powered fixtures.
A lower cost option for path lighting in spots where running wire isn’t practical. They work well for accent lighting but produce less consistent brightness than a wired system.
Smart and app controlled systems.
Timers, photocells, and phone-based controls that let you set schedules or adjust brightness without touching a switch.

Landscape lighting cost factors
Pricing for landscape lighting in the GTA typically comes down to four things: the number of fixtures, the type of fixture, wiring complexity, and whether the work is done during new construction or added to an existing patio or driveway.
As a general guide, a smaller project with 6 to 8 fixtures (a few path lights plus a couple of uplights) often falls in the $1,500 to $3,500 range installed. A more complete system covering a front and back yard, with 12 or more fixtures, tree uplighting, and patio accent lighting, is more commonly in the $3,500 to $8,000+ range.
